Steeplechase Entrance Feature, Redcar. Cast iron and steel.
5m high. 2011. Clients: FHM &
Coast & Country Housing.
These giant kelp and shell sculptures created in cast iron and galvanised steel are a celebration of Redcar’s fantastic coastal environment. At the same time they are made from the two industrial materials that helped to shape and build the town and the surrounding area; iron and steel. The sculptures aim to symbolize Redcar’s proud industrial heritage, one where iron and steel making is in the blood.
In another purely visual way the giant kelp sculptures aim to mark and frame the entrance into the Steeplechase Estate. They aim to provide a unique identity, distinctive entrance features which create a dramatic sense of place amongst an avenue of cast iron cockle shells, natural yet industrial, sculptures of contrast.
