Linthorpe Cemetery Central Feature, Middlesbrough. Galvanised Steel (with patina). 300 x 500 cm. 2009.
Client: Middlesbrough Council.
Growth takes the form of five seedlings or plant shoots which have been enlarged over forty times their actual size. Fabricated in galvanised and rusted steel the sculpture represents new life and growth emerging from the traditional iron and steel making industries that Middlesbrough is famous for, represented by the rusted steel ‘I’ beams. The sculpture could also be seen to represent the new future of the cemetery as a nature reserve and the future potential it has to grow and prosper from the seeds that have been planted by the current Regeneration Scheme.
